Ammonite
Ammonites were marine mollusks, related to today’s squids and octopuses, that lived in shells. They thrived during the Mesozoic Era (about 240 million to 66 million years ago) and became extinct around the same time as the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period. Their spiral-shaped shells are among the most well-known and widely distributed fossils, often collected for their beauty, historical significance, and purported metaphysical properties. Ammonites have spiral, ram’s horn-like shells and can range in size from a few centimeters to over 2 meters. Their shells are divided into chambers, with the outermost being the largest, used for buoyancy control.
Where Its Found
Ammonites are found in a variety of geological settings across the globe, especially in marine sedimentary rocks. Major locations include Morocco, a leading producer of ammonite fossils where specimens are often polished for display; Canada (Alberta), known for colorful, opal-like Ammolite fossils; Madagascar, which provides beautifully preserved ammonites; the United Kingdom, particularly the Jurassic Coast of Dorset; Germany, notably in Holzmaden; and the United States, where states like Montana and Wyoming are rich in ammonites and Ammolite gemstones.
Metaphysical Properties
In metaphysical practices, ammonite is believed to symbolize transformation and growth, linked to its spiral shape, which reflects the Fibonacci sequence and sacred geometry. It is thought to help release outdated patterns and attract fresh energies. Ammonites, particularly Ammolite, are used in Feng Shui to bring prosperity, health, and good luck, connecting strongly to the life force or Chi. They are also seen as protective, providing emotional stability and guarding against negative energy. Ammonites are considered grounding stones that foster a deeper connection to Earth’s energies and enhance intuition and spiritual awareness. They are associated with the root chakra for grounding and the third eye chakra for intuition and insight.
