Petrified Wood, also known as fossilized wood or agatized wood, is a type of fossil that forms when plant material is buried by sediment and protected from decay due to oxygen and organisms. Over time, the wood is replaced by minerals, primarily silica (silicon dioxide) from groundwater, which precipitates and crystallizes, turning the wood into stone in the exact form of the original wood.
Where It's Found: Petrified Wood can be found worldwide, with notable deposits in the United States, particularly in the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, which is renowned for its vast and colorful petrified wood deposits. Other significant locations include Argentina, Egypt, and Indonesia, where large, beautifully preserved specimens are often found.
Formation Process:
